The conference objectives are to:
- present and exchange knowledge on strategies to overcome key bottlenecks to implementing large scale sanitation and hygiene programs
- strengthen the evidence base for scaling up sanitation and hygiene programs in Africa
- kickstart the 5 year drive to get Africa back on track to meet the sanitation MDG and achieve sustainable universal coverage
The preliminary programme includes two types of learning opportunities:
- Thematic learning exchange which draws from key experiences and studies to address critical issues – these sessions are designed by the conference organisers.
- Seminars hosted by agencies or groups of agencies, showcasing their latest thinking and findings – these sessions are designed by the agency in consultation with the conference organizers.
The Second African Conference on Sanitation and Hygiene – AfricaSan+5 – took place in Durban, South Africa from February 18–21, 2008. It produced the eThekwini Declaration, which included “firm resolutions to place sanitation and hygiene at the top of the development agenda in Africa”.

I would like to know if the conference is catering to French Speaking Africa: will our government partners, who speak no English, be able to attend and get the most out of the conference? Will we have documentation before the conference, translated into French?
The countries with the lowest sanitation indicators ARE in West French Speaking Africa. Please don’t forget them.

this is a very interesting occassion in sanitation revolution for developing countries especially in sub saharan africa.
if possible i wish to be part of this conference.well done to all behind this movement and keep the fire burning for sustainable good sanitation in Africa for now andfuture generations.,

This is a great opportunity for sanitation and hygiene advocates and actors especially in E.Africa. Institutional sanitation especially in detention settings has always not surfaced in sanitation discussions,national sanitation work plans, civil society priority targets and remains isolated and neglected. is it possible to include prisons ,police and army sanitation focal persons into this important conference for sanitation and hygiene revolution for promotion of better future generations living conditions in Africa.

this is really so great and this will give us an opportunity us who work in the sanitation sector where by we will be able to learn and acquire more knowledge about hygiene and sanitation.
